My dad taught me my first joke long before I became a comedian.




I’m sitting beside my dad while we watch sports on television. I don’t live with my parents anymore, but I’m home for the weekend. Without even knowing that I’m writing an article about him, my dad just reached over and patted me on the back. No reason. No purpose. He’s a habitual back-patter. It happens a lot.




“Mom, why is there a Mother’s Day and a Father’s Day, but no Kid’s Day?” I asked when I was younger . . . OK, yesterday.




Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and you’ve probably begun asking yourself what the perfect gift is for that special woman you call Mom. Flowers? A spa package? That new CD she’s mentioned?




I think it’s really hard to be a mom. At the pleasantly ripe age of 29, I have a lot of friends who are moms, and I also happen to have a mom myself. So I’ve seen many moms in action.
